7 Ways to Be More Strategic With Your Brand
A strong brand doesn’t happen by accident. The businesses you admire — the ones that feel like a breath of fresh air the moment you land on their website or walk into their space — are intentional. Every touchpoint is designed, not defaulted.
My work at Meg Leonard Co. revolves around helping founders build brands and digital homes that actually support where they want to go next. Strategic, beautiful, functional. Whether I’m designing a brand identity, building a website, mapping content for social, or styling a physical space, the through-line is always strategy.
Here are seven ways to bring more intention into your own brand, from a designer who spends every day creating them.
1. Get Clear On Your Vision
Before you obsess over logos, photos, or website themes, you need a north star: your true picture of where you're going.
Your business vision is the long-term arc:
• Why you started.
• Who you're building for.
• What legacy the brand should leave.
• How you actually want to spend your days.
• Where you want to be in five years.
When clients come to me unclear on these pieces, branding becomes guesswork. When they are clear, design becomes a tool, not a bandage.
2. Know Who You’re Talking To
Your brand can’t speak to everyone, and it shouldn’t.
For most of my clients, their ideal customer is a creative, intelligent, emotionally-driven buyer. Someone who deeply values aesthetics and experience. But every founder’s audience is different.
Look at your data:
• Who’s engaging?
• Who’s converting?
• Who’s buying from competitors?
The clearer you get on this, the more magnetic your brand (and your website copy, visuals, and content) becomes.
3. Set Goals That Actually Move You Forward
Vision is the big picture. Goals are the steps. Inside my studio, every project starts with measurable goals: more qualified leads, higher conversion, a polished online presence, better client experience, more effortless sales.
When you set goals tied to your brand's performance, everything else (your content, visuals, website layout, user flow) becomes easier to execute.
4. Be Intentional With Your Content
It’s tempting to create content impulsively (hello, TikTok trends). But I will always advocate for thoughtful content over reactive content.
For my clients, content strategy is about:
• Reinforcing the brand story
• Elevating the perceived value
• Connecting with the right people
• Driving action without feeling “salesy”
Slow down. Create on purpose. Your content becomes both more effective and more sustainable.
5. Develop a Real Marketing Strategy
Instagram, nor a website are a marketing plan. It’s the foundation your marketing sits on.
When I build client sites, we map out how people discover, explore, trust, and convert. You need a plan for:
• Getting in front of new audiences
• Nurturing interest
• Guiding people to hire or purchase
• Following up in a meaningful way
Your branding should support this ecosystem, not sit on its own island.
6. Create a Design System
Consistency is one of the most underrated growth levers in business.
A visual identity, a messaging guide, reusable templates, and a design system ensure your brand feels recognizable everywhere: your website, emails, social, proposals, packaging, even your interior spaces if you’re brick-and-mortar.
This is why my branding clients receive comprehensive brand guides and Canva asset kits. It eliminates guesswork and creates that “wow, everything feels so put together” effect.
7. Analyze like a Boss
Your website analytics, social insights, and sales data tell the real story:
• What’s resonating
• What’s converting
• Where people are dropping off
• What people think your brand is versus what you’re trying to say
Inside my studio, we use data to refine everything from homepage layouts to content themes to the customer journey. When you’re making decisions based on actual numbers, your brand becomes smarter, stronger, and more sustainable.
